. . . we are floating through space


On the 16th of August 1960, Captain Joseph Kittinger jumped from the Excelsior III (a large helium balloon) at 102,800 ft (20 miles above earth). The maximum speed was 614 mph before opening his parachute at 80,000 ft. His records for the highest ascent in a balloon, the highest parachute jump, the longest freefall, and the fastest speed by a man through the atmosphere have still not been beaten by anyone to this day.
